The city of Hobart is situated in Lake County, right next to the Porter County border, approximately 40 miles southeast of Chicago. It is one of the most populated cities in the area, with only Schererville and Crown Point in Lake and Porter Counties coming close with 1,048 and 958 permits respectively. Most of the city is part of the school city of Hobart, while other parts are part of the River Forest Community School Corporation or the Merrillville Community School District. Hobart is home to a number of businesses in its downtown business district, including the historic Art Theatre.
There are also many retailers and restaurants in the surrounding area, although most businesses along Hobart's south side should list their addresses as Merrillville. The city is also home to Lake George, a popular spot for people to gather and take a stroll along the shoreline. Midwest Products, a manufacturer of materials for hobbyists and drone models, has been based in Hobart since 1952. Hobart's construction commissioner Carroll Lewis said that most of the city's new residents come from Illinois, some as retirees. The city's total housing stock increased by nearly 10 percent due to its growth which was not linked to annexation.
Hobart Sky Ranch Airport (3HO) is located 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the downtown business district. It is also home to the Indiana Botanical Garden, which is the country's largest and oldest herbal retailer. Indiana is the 38th-largest state by total land area, with an area of 36,420 square miles (94,327 square kilometers) and has a total population of 6,696,893 people according to the most recent United States census. A study from 2000 showed that 85 percent of travelers from northwestern Indiana live in Lake County. However, most of the growth in both Lake and Porter Counties has occurred outside of towns and cities.
